Summary:
Assists the pharmacist in reviewing, processing, preparing, filling, labeling and dispensing of medications, supplies and the provision of pharmaceutical care, answering questions and requests, maintaining adequate drug inventory and quality control procedures. Shall work under the direct supervision of a licensed registered pharmacist, and will only perform activities that comply with the State Board of Pharmacy practices. Certified Pharmacy Technician licensure is not required but is highly desirable.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Acts as point of contact for third party insurance companies and audit situations
- Participates in orientation, training, and continuing education programs for technicians
- Actively contributes to the plans and achievement of pharmacy objectives and goals.
- Actively contributes to the evaluation and continuous improvement of patient services, policies, and procedures
- Coordinates and oversees one or more complex administrative pharmacy functions in order to relieve professional pharmacist staff of such work
- Provides advanced technical expertise and coordination of data maintenance, records management, facility maintenance, and/or other administrative support activities.
- Coordinates and performs advanced data maintenance and reports activities to ensure appropriate record keeping; prepares routine and special reports and queries
- Serves as a resource for the more complex technical pharmacy issues and questions
- Ensures the cleanliness of assigned work areas to meet standards and requirements
- Leads and coordinates special technical projects as assigned
- Accurately prepares medication orders for dispensing by the pharmacist by retrieving, counting, pouring, weighing, labeling and mixing medications
- Verifies prescription information and dosage
- Enters patient and medication order information into the pharmacy system
- Processes and submits insurance claims
- Assists patient and prescribers with the Prior Authorization (PA) process
- Provides quality customer service to patients and other healthcare providers
- Processes new and refill prescriptions
- Promotes patients’ drug compliance
- Coordinates responses and resolutions with appropriate internal and external parties.
- Performs all tasks in a safe manner that is consistent with corporate policies as well as state and federal laws
- Assists the pharmacist with inventory of drugs when necessary and works with the pharmacy buyer to achieve inventory goals.
- Requests additional refills via electronic, fax, or phone
- Processes new prescriptions as a test claim to check copay and if a PA is needed
- Assists patient and prescribers with the PA process
- Receives written and telephone prescriptions or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate
- Calls patients to schedule delivery/pickup when new prescriptions are received
- Works the Unassigned Queue
- Ensures security of pharmacy and medications
- Verifies the information on the prescription is complete and accurate
- Maintains proper storage and security conditions for drugs
- Answers telephones, responds to questions or requests
- Supplies and monitors robotic machines that dispense medicine into containers, and labels the containers
- Assists customers by answers simple questions locates items or refers them to the pharmacist for medication information
- Assists the pharmacist with monitoring and increasing patient compliance
- Operates cash registers to accept payment from customers
- Establishes and maintains patient profiles, includes lists of medications taken by individual patients
- Keeps pharmacy supplies (e.g. bottles, bags, receipts, staples, etc.) well stocked
- Orders, receives and stocks the pharmacy shelves with medications when they arrive from suppliers
- Performs all other duties as assigned by appropriate management
